1987
Musclemouth has a video post up of a Bill Moyers show from 1987. It is, to say the least, chilling, both for how much it describes our own current state but also for how much it demonstrates the pathetic state of the media today. I can't imagine seeing anything like this clip on television now. Interestingly, since 1987, the "secret government" described by Moyer has only become more obvious and open in the performance of it agenda while media coverage of it has all but disappeared.
It is no wonder the right has been after Moyers for years, broadcasting as he did, the nefarious machinations of an underworld we all have known about but have rarely seen exposed like this.

Excellent. I'll be over soon. And that really was haunting.
Sure was...complete with government-contracted mafioso kings from Vegas and Chi-Town attempting to asassinate Castro the "dictator". Tom Clancy couldn't make this stuff up. And to think, it's been going on since 1947 (when Truman founded the CIA and probably also the NSA.) America the myth is completely evaporating under the all-seeing Internet, eh? My theory is that the spiritual feelings of the "religious" right are being harnessed as an energy force in an attempt to counteract the great awakening that is going on in America. All the government has to do is switcheroo the word "God" with the word "America" and, badda bing badda boom: mass cognitive shutdown by the millions. Makes sense, no?
Dig your blog.
Yeah, I think you're exactly right about that. The Christian Right is constantly being used and they don't seem to know it (although there is some evidence lately that suggests they are starting to catch on; they were uniformly unimpressed by Bill Frist's latest gay marriage amendment effort six months before this election, as opposed to the last effort six months before the 2004 election).
The media these days are buying into the whole God & Jesus pony show, as well, led by those useful tools at Fox News. If vehicles like Fox News demonstrate one thing it is that the corporate media and the political establishment they serve are on a mission to keep the public as ignorant as possible. Fox News is like the lemon pledge of America: spray it on and it shines! Unfortunately, do that long enough and a dull, waxy build-up is sure to follow.
