The Black of the Hand

Atrios thinks he has come out once in awhile and tell people how it is and, more importantly, how everyone should just stop bugging him:
Whenever I write one of these posts people always assume something has annoyed me or that I'm whining or being ungrateful or something. I'm not doing any of these things. I just think it's a useful service to provide now and then.

1) My blog doesn't exist to promote your business, your pet cause, your blog, etc... and I'm under no obligation to do so.
Frankly, I really don't give a shit whether you're annoyed or not about anything, Duncan. And I don't know what kind of blog company you keep but I know of no one doing this who expects or demands x-posting. I have to wonder what kind of uncouth lunkheads are reading Eschaton, anyway.

The galling conceit contained in this pissy post that presumes Atrios must deliver his wisdom to the proles on occasion is one of the more disgraceful displays of seemingly well-intentioned arrogance I've yet seen in the blog world. I only wonder if he was like this when he started.

I find Eschaton to be increasingly irrelevant these days. Most posts are just links, tagged with snarky burp, to news and articles that are, presumably, things people have emailed him. In these days of RSS feeds and news aggregators, the facililty provided by Eschaton is ever diminished, if near non-existent. In fact, the post in question is probably the longest item he's written in some time.

Though he didn't say it explicity, Bill of Portland Maine, pretty much sums up the near worthless quality of posts that a reader might typically find at Eschaton:
A typical day in Eschatonville: Open thread, open thread, open thread, "Heh," open thread, open thread, "Wanker", open thread, "Heh indeedy," open thread, open thread, "Bobo strikes again"...Boobies!
This is not too much of an exageration, if it is one at all. I've got some advice for Black: maybe you should start producing some content. I understand you're an economist, so produce some useful discussion about the serious bloody economic mess this country is in instead of just being a news feed. There are plenty of them out there now and you just don't need to do that anymore. Stop bitching about getting email. If you didn't want that to happen, you shouldn't have started this in the first place.

Oh, and spare us all your seasoned advice, though I, for one, won't be seeing it anyway.

I never heard of any of these blogs before your post this morning. I guess I'm just not connected. We (Toner Mishap) receive between 300-400 hits a day and this is after we said good-bye in early October. While it's fun to be read by many people, I personally write what interests and amuses me – that also goes for what I read. However, I have to say that what Atrios posted is not all that offensive or wrong. Shorter pieces do get read more readily and many people try to jump on the bandwagon of a popular blog.

Amen to that. I've stopped reading Atrios altogether.

In Atrios' defense, he is about 87 in blog years so that is probably why he sounds like a crotchety old man yelling at other bloggers to get off his lawn.
