May day, may day

Workers of the world unite! You have nothing to loose but your chains!

This morning, on NPR, I heard the upbeat declaration by the NPR announcers that today was May Day, a world-wide labour day celebrated almost everywhere but the United States. I wondered if he understood just why that was, what it meant or if he was even aware of its significance at all.
