Arms akimbo

Demonstrating that the Bush administration is an equal opportunity employer of regional instability, the Pentagon recently announced the sale of some 500 missiles to Taiwan, previously reneging on agreements to reduce arms sales there. This upset China and Beijing has called for the cancellation of the sale, while some groups in Taiwan are also opposed to the sale, knowing full well the tension it will cause.

Chinese military spokeman, Qin Gang:
We solemnly demand the leader of the United States... immediately cancel this weapons sale (and) avoid harming the peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits and Sino-US relations.
To the Defense Department though, escalated arms sales are actually just peace enhancers, designed to help everyone get along.

I don't think its possible under Bush to stop oil and land grabs nor arms sales among the many more ways he's making the rich richer and the world less stable.

Not selling weapons of any type to Taiwan for the foreseeable future is a no-brainer. Oh yes, a no-brainer is our dictator du jour.
