Made in America

Charming.
US is only country to oppose UN arms trade treaty

America is the only country to have voted against a proposed United Nations treaty aimed at controlling international arms sales.

The proposed treaty, which human rights groups have promoted as a significant move towards keeping small arms out of conflict zones, was endorsed on Tuesday by 15 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, including the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, the South African archbishop.

The measure, aimed at closing loopholes in existing arms trade treaties, would investigate ways to impose standards on the import, export and transfer of weapons.

The resolution was adopted with 139 countries voting in favour of the motion, 24 abstentions and only one "no" vote.
The free-flow of arms in the world is one of the reasons US troops are getting blown up and shot every fucking day. Why does the Bush administration hate American troops? Well, we know why. The US is the leading arms dealer in world. Such a treaty would tend to affect the bottom line for a lot of American defense contractors. So, US troops -- and everyone else for that matter -- be damned. It's all about the money.

this is outrageous, right? i mean, terribly outrageous. it's amazing, but with the propaganda from the gov't and media turned up to 11 with the election around the corner - i feel it's almost impossible to think straight. this story makes for a good example...

first, it won't be covered by the MSM because it looks poorly on bush and the republicans and govt. but let's say bloggers picked it up and it makes hay. sunday morning we'd have the same white males, occasional female and juan williams telling us why its necessary and laugh off some joke that one overheard some crazy barbara streisand lefty saying it was immoral. what a fool that hippie loon must be.

maybe i'm overreacting or paranoid b/c i'm pretty sure this is horrendous crazy immoral and stupid. it's crazy outrageous stupid, right?

Mash,

Well, of course it's insane. Which is why it is typical of Bush administration foreign policy. They have made it plainly clear that adherence to international treaties of any kind will not be part of their agenda. The ICC? forget it. NPT? nope. Geneva conventions? Kidding. WTO rulings? Hah! The Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel landmines? won't touch it.

In 2002, The US withdrew from the ABM treaty, which was between the US and the USSR. Admittedly, since the USSR doesn't exist anymore, the treaty was technically void. But the Bushies have refused to further engage any treaty talks with Russia or other entities that might still possess old Soviet missiles.

But we have to worry about lude things Jim Webb wrote in a novel years ago. Where are your priorities?
